Lori - that is the question I want nobody to wonder about. The blog is not about showing off how fast you are, it is about getting faster. Different people have a different level of natural ability as well as the opportunity to train and recover, but everybody can do their very honest best with what they've got. We are here to encourage and help with training advice everybody who is brave enough to try.

You were not the only one who struggled after mile 10. Everybody does to some extent in any half marathon regardless of how fast they are. Additionally, in this particular one this is where the headwind really picked up. But you still managed to run under 2:00! What is your best half-marathon time and on which course?

Treadmill is ok. as long as you get out on the road at least 2 x a week!

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Apr 09, 2008 at 14:43:59

I would recommend getting off the treadmill at all costs. You do not race on a treadmill, why train on it? Treadmill running is the closest thing you can do to running in a confined space, and definitely beats sitting on your rear end, but it is still not quite your normal running.

Also, if time permits, try running no less than 6 miles a day 6 days a week. Ease off the pace to about 10:00 - 10:30 per mile at first. If everything is fine after a couple of weeks, if you have the time, make it no less than 7 miles a day, if not, just up the pace a bit.

From Lori on Wed, Apr 09, 2008 at 18:15:27

I run outside every Saturday, and when the weather is nice I run trails at least once a week.

Sasha, time is always the issue. I work full time, and have a family. Besides trying to do the other things I want/need to do. What would this schedule do for me. Running longer, but slower? Is this for better endurance? Even though I have run for a while, I have never really taken the time to get good at it.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 18:06:24

Running long and relatively slow does more for you than short and running fast. Go to the Racing Team page and see how they train. You'll find about 90% of their mileage being done at 1 minute or more slower than their marathon race pace, and you'll also find they are putting in a lot of miles. This is a well-proven pattern of success in long distance running. Everybody on the blog who changed from the Runner's World training style with complex low mileage schedules to a simple 6 days a week run as many miles as I am fit for at the time has experience significant improvements. As an example, check Michelle Lowry's blog. She is a mother of 3 small children, and she does work as well. When she first joined, she was doing the Runner's World thing - let's see how little mileage I can get away with if I throw in speed work here and there. Her short-term marathon goal was 3:20, and for her long term goal she wrote 3:10 - is it even possible? Well, after a few months of proper training she ran 3:00:43!

Time constraints make it difficult to put in the miles, but there is always a way. You have to get creative, though. I've found some interesting ways to do it. Run with a stroller. Run to the store literally, bring your groceries back in the stroller. Run around a park while the kids are playing. Park a distance away from where you are going and run to and back to get in an extra mile or two for the day.

Total Distance

I did 20 minutes of upper body lifting. Then ran 3 miles at a 7.5 - 8.5 incline. (still getting ready for the rely) lowered the incline to 0 and ran at 7.2 speed. I love the way 0 incline feels after the hills. I think I'm flying :)

From Lori on Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 11:45:25

Sasha, I have run a few marathons, never as fast as I would have liked. I'm registered now for the Ogden. But I'm having second thoughts about being ready for it. Especially now that I have taken your challenge to run 6 miles a day six days a week. (I still don't think I will run on Fridays though, I need a rest before my long runs on Saturday) I'm almost 45 and I know that I need to increase my miles/speed slower, I had many injuries last year, mostly plantar fasciitis. I'm really getting concerned now that the marathon is getting closer. I'm thinking of maybe just running the half, if they let me switch. Hmmm I dont' know what to do.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 12:37:44

If you have to rest for a long run, your long run is too long. A long run should be an ultra-race. At this point, I think going longer than 14 is not a good idea. Many runners believe that the key to running a good marathon is a long run. I think there is nothing more to that belief that the fact that is more convenient to do a long run on a weekend. If you look at how elites train, they hardly ever go more in one weekend run than they do total on any given day. From what I've seen, getting out 6 days a week and how far you go on average on those days contributes 70% of your ability to sustain your pace at the end of a marathon, with the long run being responsible only for about 30% of it. Over the years I've tried varying my long run anywhere from 20 to 26 miles, and have gotten the best results with 20, even though I've never run less than 80 miles a week during those periods. I think for those running less mileage the proportions apply. Going more than 25-30% of your weekly mileage in a long run is excessive and will only wear you out instead of building you up.

Switching to the half is not a bad idea. A marathon off low mileage can knock you out pretty bad. On the other hand, without backing off at all, I think you have a good shot for your best marathon, assuming that others were done off lower mileage. For an example of that happening, check out Josse's blog (http://josse.fastrunningblog.com/). Last week she PR'ed on a slower course with no significant pre-race taper, and hitting her life time mileage high the very week of the race. After she finished she had enough freshness to go back on the course and pace her mom.

Contrary to a popular belief it is not the high mileage that causes injuries. High mileage with improper recovery (lack of sleep, bad diet) can, if you push yourself too hard it can happen as well, but more often the cause is inconsistent training. Your body can adapt to large amounts of daily stress, but if that stress comes sporadically your body gets caught by surprise. After a couple of days off, you are more likely to be out of tune with your body and pay attention only to the strong parts while ignoring the weak. Also, from the mental aspect, the feeling that you now need to make up for the missed training makes you push harder than you should be.

This is probably too fast. Slow down to about 9:15-9:30 per mile. Your body is probably still is not realizing another 6 is coming the next day, and the next, and the next. Even if you are really fit to safely run at 8:40 pace every day, it is better to err on the safe side. You will hardly lose anything if you err 40 seconds a mile on the slow side, but you will overtrain in a couple of weeks if you err the other way around.

Even a good night sleep was not helpful today. Maybe I had too much sleep? :( Anyway my friend and I ran the parkway from mouth of the canyon to the Fort, around in the Fort just a bit, and back. I really thought I would have felt better today. I have been eating better, sleeping better. But I still struggled. I'm feeling very discouraged right now. I thought I was mentally and physically a stronger person but lately I have been feeling very weak both mentally and physically when it comes to my running. Maybe I need to have my thyroid medicine adjusted. I go every 6 months, but my next appointment is not until July. I also wonder am I using this as an excuse for my lack of drive? Even when I'm tired on my run, I think through my head, does my feet hurt? No. Does anything really hurt? No, then why am I struggling? I miss my friend Scott who was the person that got me running. Anyway, I feel pretty good now, I can do all the things I need to get done, I'm a bit stiff when I bend for a long period weeding in the garden, but nothing bad. So then I start thinking should I have pushed myself harder?
Isn't running supposed to be fun, what ever happened to the runs when you felt like you could go all day, that everything felt good, strong. Well sorry for venting so much, but this is my day.

Good job on the miles. The only time I would get concerned about not being able to push yourself harder is when you are in a race. In training you should back off and get through the run in a way that you feel ready to repeat it.

When training properly you will not feel bubbly energetic on every run. The energy moves inward and is not quick to come out unless you give it a very good reason to. I often feel sluggish before a good race that very day during a warm-up. I often am not able to run sub-8:00 without some serious focus. Then once the gun goes off I am able to run 5:30 pace or faster, and it does not seem that much harder than the warm-up effort.

Also, your mileage has just increased, and it should take you about 3 weeks or so to get used to the change.

Well all I can say is YAHOOOO! I was very happy to finish feeling as good as I do. After a terrible half a few weeks ago... this was wonderful. I'm realizing now that restricting my calories in hopes to loose some weight is not good before running a race. It is hard though to want to loose that last 10-15 pounds knowing that running will be much easier and better for my body in the long run. But I'm certain that this was my down fall on the half. I eat much better the past few weeks and made sure I was drinking plenty and it defiantly showed in how I felt.

I could not have asked for better weather. Not too hot... not too cold. I thought the course was good. Loved running by the horses and watching them chase us by the fence. It was almost like they were saying... watch, I'll show you how to do this and how much fun running is. They were fantastic! For me, I love to run when the sun is at my back. As my friend and I were running I would watch our shadows, and think to myself how great it was to be there with her, both feeling strong.

Also congratulations to the top three men, all with their Fast Running Blog shirts on. That was fun to see.

Good progress. Regarding diet, focus on quality rather than quantity. If you eat a healthy combination of fruits, vegetables, grains with moderate amounts of meat, and completely banish all forms of junk food, your body will auto-regulate the appetite so you will eat enough to have the energy to run and replace the counter-productive weight with productive weight. Being 10 lb lighter helps you run only if you are dropping dead weight. You do not want to drop your blood volume, muscle mass, glycogen stores, bone density and other good forms of weight.

Nothing wrong with long, but hard is not a good idea. If you feel too wound up to run the right pace, run one mile pretty hard (sub-8:00) after a brief warm-up, and that should wind you down and give you something to think about for the rest of the run. If it does not, do it one more time.

I didn't get a run in today. My oldest son is graduating from the U tonight, and due to my lack of sleep all week I did not get up early enough to run before work. Is it too late to run 21 miles this Saturday, then taper next two weeks before the marathon? This is one of those things that I'm really bad at knowing what to do. There is always that voice in the back of my mind that I have not run enough to be ready.

My running friend pulled her groin muscle so she has now back out of running the marathon with me. I'm very sad that I will be there without her, we are so closely matched that we are right by each other when we run. It just won't be the same running it without her :(

I live in Pleasant View.. if anyone needs a place to crash let me know I have a spare room. (twin bed) or the floor if you have a sleeping bag... or even the couch.

I would recommend about 16 miles this Saturday, but see if you can get in 3 miles or so (or even 1 for that matter) tonight or this afternoon if you do not have the time for your normal 6 miles.

I would also not recommend a taper before this marathon other than maybe jog 3 miles instead of 6 the day before. Two reasons - a) taper helps only when you have been running enough miles and have done it for a while b) taper is worth it when you have saved enough capital and what to fully cash it out in one race. Based on your 30 K right now you are ready to run about 4:10 - 4:15. You might get a bit of a kick up in fitness from the last couple of weeks which could push it into 4:00 - 4:05 range. So tapered you may run a couple of minutes faster than untapered (which is not always the case, sometimes taper brings out too much pre-race excitement and makes you run worse), but this will affect your preparation for the fall marathon as you will take longer to recover as well from having pushed yourself harder in addition to the loss of fitness from the taper.

Just wish I would have remembered to bring a towel and brush. Trying to wash up on the sink and brush through my sweaty hair with my fingers was not fun. But at least the run was good.

This is a very solid run. Even if this was all out, this still shows your potential for a Boston Qualifier this fall in Top of Utah (assuming you did not get into St. George).

How much effort did you put into it, and what was your split at the half? I assume if you and your friend stayed together the whole race, one of you was not racing all out.

Also, it would be good to see where your 5K speed is at. If your effort was not all out and you feel recovered, you can try Magna 5 K this Saturday. Otherwise, try Heart of Holladay in June.

From Lori on Mon, May 19, 2008 at 17:30:56

Sasha,

First thanks for the commenting on my blog, it is great to have someone of yoru calaber to talk with and give me advise.

This was not an all out effort for myself or my friend. I can't remember my splits at the half. I think it was 1:56 but not sure. My friend is an ultra marathoner, this was a training run for Squaw Peak (I think in three weeks) I felt good enough at the end to sprint the last (Felt like a sprint, but probably still pretty slow) I know that all your advise and all the miles really made a big difference in how I felt at this marathon. I check my time from St. George 07 and I was seven minutes faster!!! I couldn't believe it. I didn't get into St. George, but I'm thinking about Top of Utah!

Speed at a 5K... that would be interesting, I have never been very good at it.

I feel good but won't be able to run tonight (have to give a shower for my new daughter-in-law) but I will be back at it Tuesday.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, May 19, 2008 at 17:52:25

If you could find 20 minutes before bed and go for a short jog, that would be helpful.

I hoped that it would all start feeling better after a couple of miles but not today. I hate to even post my miles and time today because they are so bad. But I probably would have turned around alot sooner if I didn't have the blog to post on.

Maybe it's just after marathon blues... or hormones... I think I also need new shoes.

I ran 6.5 in 1:03:41 (that is embarrassing) but there you have it... and everything still hurts...How can you get yourself mentally stronger when you have days like this. It is very discouraging. Overall good training this month in spite of a couple of glitches. Eventually you will learn to deal with those. You have to get creative sometimes when a run does not happen in the morning. Errands on foot, stroller, looping around a park, and if all else fails, then the evil of all evils - the treadmill. It OK to do a run in a few segments if you have to. A 2 mile errand, then an hour later another 2 mile errand, and then 2 more miles afterwards when you can sneak it it. That is just as good, if not better in some cases, than 6 straight miles.

Regarding sleep. If you lay in bed and just cannot sleep, you can try something like a physics textbook or the details of the law of Moses in the Old Testament (e.g Leviticus). Something you would struggle to understand.

Sasha

I have apprieciated all your advise and help that you have given me out here on the blog. It has helped me more then I can ever explain to you.

I have just found out that my running friend has three pelvic fractures. I was wondering if you can help me with any advise for her. She feels she will never be able to run again, and this is so hard for her. Running something she identifies to her and cannot bear the thought that it might be taken away. I have tried to be positive and let her know that as long as she is smart in her recovery it will be just a bump in the road. But do you have any advise to help me? And this is so scary to me... any advise on prevention of something like this? Thanks for any help/advise you can give.

Lori:

I (fortunately for myself, not fortunately for those I am trying to help) have very little personal experience with running injuries. From what I have observed, however, most running injuries heal eventually when you take time off running and cross-train in a way that does hurt the affected area, and then with a cautious and consistent approach you are able to run again.

I do have a lot of experience in the area of injury prevention. I found the following elements to be important:

* train consistently - it is the sporadic unexpected stress that injuries even if it is small

* train below your limits

* know what injures you and stay away from it - for me it is track and skewed surfaces

* be sparing with speed work, and do it only when your body is sufficiently fit

* eat healthy

* get plenty of sleep

* avoid cheerleader/high school football team type of ambition in your training and racing

You finished in 158th place out 655 women in Ogden. That would put you in the top 25% in the group of women that were confident enough in their fitness to try a marathon. It would be safe to assume that Ogden marathon stats are representative of the speed distribution in the state of Utah. With that assumption, 75% of the women that would try a marathon would be slower than you. And that is in a state of Utah where people are more fit than the national average.

Adam,

Thanks for the congrats! I was very happy to finish! I hope that if I do this angain I can improve my times.

I don't usually say to much about what I sculpt. Because people usually give me a funny look when I tell them. But since I can't see the look you will give me I guess I will tell. I sculpt one-of-a-kind dolls. They range in size from a small 6 inch fairy, small and life scale babies, to a life size witch that stands on my porch at Halloween. Currently I'm tring to engineer a ball jointed doll.

If you have a website with pictures of your creations you should post it on your blog, free advertisement... Good luck with your running and your art.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 13:52:06

What were your splits on each leg? Kory and Adam ran your legs on our two teams, so we can do a decent fitness estimate based on what you got. Also, how did your team finish?

You can actually hyperlink your doll sculpture site from the blog. Highlight by dragging the mouse over the text, then click on the icon with the world in the editor and type in the full URL of the link (http://www.lorimetcalfdolls.blogspot.com). This could actually help you up your Google rankings, and I do not mind at all when real runners (not spammers that set up a blog just for this purpose) use the blog this way.

From Metcalf Running on Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 20:53:49

Sasha,

Thanks for showing me how to link my blog, I'm not real good with that stuff on computers. My son-in-law was the one who helped set up my blog.

I hate to post my times from WBR because everyone here did such a great job, and I kept forgetting to start my watch when I was running, so I will have to estimate my times.

Leg 1 - 28 min

Leg 2 - 57 min

Leg 3 - 60 min.

My team was the Crash Dummies (Autoliv Team) our total time was 29:33. When I looked out on the site to see our time, it looked like we placed about the middle of the pack.

From Adam RW on Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 22:53:03

It is VERY important never to be ashamed of your time. Especially when comparing to others. We all run and that is what unites us. I try to always just run against myself and that is all you can ask. Keep up the hard work and that is a great effort up that hill for your 3rd leg!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 16:57:21

Lori - some number crunching. We will use Adam as a base to evaluate the relative difficulty of the legs. The reason being is that he is a fairly consistent runner, and when things go wrong they will never go too wrong. And when they go right, they cannot go too right on just one leg. On the first leg your speed ratio was 1.47. On the second leg it was 1.54, and on the third leg it was 1.83. To put things in perspective. Adam can run about 1:15 half marathon on a flat course at 4500 feet in ideal conditions. If you were to maintain the speed ratio of the first leg, that gives you 1:50, second leg, 1:55, and third leg 2:17.

So the good news is that you should be able to run a flat half at altitude somewhere between 1:50 and 1:55. Possibly faster because I imagine Adam would have been more aggressive from the gun relative to his half-marathon race pace in his early legs and we are not taking that into account.

The mystery is in the a breakdown of some kind on the third leg. One issue was the heat - Adam ran that leg around 9:00 AM, you were probably there around 12 or 1, so it was a lot warmer. Because you were running longer, the heat would have affected you more than it would have affected Adam even if he had to run it at the same time. Another issue is being a male under 30 he would tend to lose less from a steep grade, there is a fairly strong correlation between the explosive power of the muscle and the ability to sustain speed on a steep uphill (not just run at fast speed, but run at a higher percentage of your flat speed). It was a third leg, and he runs higher mileage, so he should be losing relatively less from the fatigue. I would also expect less neural sleep-deprivation fatigue from a male under 30 than a female master, so that is a factor also. So this increased gap is probably to be expected, but so far you are the only data point in the 4:00 marathon range we can analyze, so we are still learning. However, one benefit is that with the data you posted we can now help all teams in your range plan their legs.

Sasha, Your attention to detail and critical thinking is always an inspiration. I'm glad you chose me to compare to because it helped me put things into perspective as well.

Lori, I'm glad you added the link to your dolls. They look great. The detail is amazing. I didn't look extensively but did you have the life size one on there as well?

Today was one of those runs that makes you realizes why you love to run. And so thankful that I live so close to the mountains. I really needed a changed of scenery so I ran the trails above 22nd street in Ogden. I love these trails and today it felt great!! I was able to take some of the hills faster then I have been able to in the past. Also I think I finished my regular loop faster then I had in a while. I don't know the mileage, I just time myself and estimate the miles. I think next time I might do some longer runs up by Snow Basin.

I had a low mileage week, but I guess that's OK. I'm out on furlough from work for 4 weeks so hopefully I can get more lovely morning trail runs in. :)

But around mile 4-6 I felt pretty good. 7-8 I was getting a bit tired, and heavy legged. Not a real great run. I thought I had planned to run 7.5 but took a few different turns so when I came home and check it out again I was happy to see that I had actually done more. I would add 5-10 K races, or if you want to save gas/time/entry fee, just measure out a course, invite a pacer (we have plenty on the blog in your area), and run a time trial once every two weeks.

From Metcalf Running on Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 14:23:53

Ran the trails today, just not as far as I did the other day. I needed to get home so I knew I only had about an hour or so to get my run in. I think it ended up being about 7 miles. But I'm not sure. I had some difficulty at the start, lots of fluttery heart beats that seemed to make it difficult to keep a good breath. Felt a little like I was going to hyperventilate. But after about 20 minutes I seemed to be able to get into a good beat. Still had a couple fluttery beats, but nothing like at the start. After the turning point a decided to run up to the bridge in Taylors canyon, this is a bit of a test that I do to myself to see if I can reach the bridge without having to stop. And today was a good day!! Then it's down a steep rocking part until I get to the rolly polly part back to the car. Love the last part if I'm feeling good I can really open up... it makes me feel like a kid :)

I ran the trails today, I'm back to work Monday so I will be banished to only being able to run trails on the weekends :( so it was a rather bitter sweet run. It's bitter sweet for other reasons also. Tomorrow is my 45th birthday, this is the age my friend Scott was when he took his life. He was the person that got me to be a runner, so running in the trails where we used to run together so close to a birthday that reminds me of him was difficult, but in some ways good. It's hard to explain. There is a sense of him present with me. My memories of our runs, his smile when I made him walk for a bit because I was out of breath. Him telling me I was doing a good job. These things were all there today.  I ran a bit longer trail then I usually do and felt so good, I know it was because I felt him so strong today. So sorry for being a downer here today, sometimes the sting of his death is still very strong. But I know he would be happy that I'm still running the trails.

I'm never certain of the exact mile when I run the trails, so this is an estimate.

What a crazy run this morning! I got up to run before work, that means the alarm goes off at 4:30am. AHHHH, it takes me until about 4:50 to get dress and get moving enough to run. I thought I had taken care of all the essentials before I headed out, but about 1.5 into my run I could tell I needed a potty break... So I knew just around the corner was a field... turned off my head light and time and found a bush... no luck... got back to the road, turned on the head light, turned on the time, and started off again. About another mile had the same feeling... found another field... turned off the head light, the time found a bush...no luck again!! AGHHH this is crazy, I always knew I was a person that had trouble with the free and easy feeling of open an outhouse but this was getting painful. Anyway I started out again, forgot to start my time... then realized and started it. Got about 1 mile from home and was hoping I could get there with no trouble.. tried one more time before I got to where the houses start and knew that I would not have any bushes...had a small success and was able to finish my run. When I re-mapped it out it looks like I was just short of 5 miles :( I'll see what I can do to make it an even 5 next time.

I have a massage tonight but I'm still hoping to get a few more miles in after work. So I will up date later. With all the time trouble I don't know how accurate my time is today. Sorry if this blog had too much information :)

Well I took off work today because I had my doctor appointment and also my daughter's first orthodontist appointment. So I ran in the morning before I went to the doctor. It was my six month check up with my endrocronologist. I have been experianceing some fatigue and ackyness mostly in the mornings, and a few other things. So I expected that I would need some adjustments on my medications. I was surprised when he told me all my levels looked good. After talking a while he says he suspects that I'm doing too much. I was stunned! To much! who is not doing too much? I told him that I would not stop running, and he agreed that I shouldn't but I needed to find some more quite/relaxing time. I think he could see how frustrated I was, between work running, family, household things, and my sculpting (which has been very minimal lately) where can I find quite time? I told him I would try, but it seems unlikely to me that there will be any changes soon. I need to look at my schedule and see what I can do.
My run was pretty uneventful, about the same miles and about the same time. Felt about the same as the past few days.

My work's 5K is tomorrow so the plan is to run 5 before the race then I hope I can run the race if they don't need me to help with things. Will see how it goes.

Tonight was a pretty uneventful run, not much to say about it.

6.2 miles- 55:38

I do have a question though. How many miles do you get from your shoes. I know Sasha gets more then us mere mortals. But I have been getting some aches when I'm running nothing big but I didn't think my shoes were that old, I even check the sales receipt (I save them til I buy a new pair) for the date. 5/28/08, but when I check my mileage on them it was 510. Should I be able to get more? I have a small hole in the back by my ackeles tendon that is giving me a blister. I guess this is one of the hazards of running more miles them before. Needing to get shoes more often. :)

Your shoes are done ;) The recommend 4 to 5 hundred miles. If you have two or more pares to rotate you can get more than 500 per pare. (There is this recovery time for the shoes cushy stuff and running everyday on them, does not give the cushy stuff time to "recover" fully) If your feet/legs are bugging you, it's time for new shoes :) Easy fix, expensive, but easy :)

Great pace and miles! You are smokin'!

From Metcalf Running on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 22:02:36

Marion,

I figured... that was probably the problem :( Looks like I will be at the running store this weekend. I have never had two pairs to rotate between, just so much money. Maybe one day I will find that money tree I have been searching for LOL

Lori

From marion on Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 00:19:36

No kiding- they are really expensive. There is a place down here in Spanish Fork who give 25% off their already low prices. My shoes are ~$109 at runners corner and I get them there for ~$69. Its great. Hey- let me know if you find that money tree :)

Was up to late reading the last book of the Twilight series, almost done. so I got a late start to my run this morning. Thank heavens that is was a bit cooler today and there was a nice breeze on the trails. Did my regular loop, and then failed miserably when I tried my test of running to the bridge up Taylor's canyon. My legs were very wobbly feeling the rest of the way to the car and even a bit now. But I loved the run!! running the trails is aways good!

Most beautiful weather. I am loving this early fall teaser! WONDERFUL miles and pace! YOu know that wobbly feeling can be kind of cool if you think of it like you would when you were a kid. Remember spinning around and around and how fun it was being dizzy? Wobble legs- the fun carnival part of running. Woo hoo! Lori is a weeble wobble! :) I think I am suffering low blood sugar! ;)

From Metcalf Running on Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 16:35:53

Marion, you are so funny! I remember as a kid I loved that feeling. I would do summer salts til my head was spinning, when the feeling stopped I do more :) The only problem with the wobbly legs in the trails is I usually trip and fall when I feel that way. But not today!!! It was great!

If it was not for the blog today would have been a day that I didn't run, so I did the Hooper Tomato Days 5K. I was going to take my mom with me so she could do the walk but she is 82 and just getting over a cold so I thought it was better to keep her out of the rain. I visited her after on my way home.

So the course was flat and just around a big block out in Hooper. I was bib 100 of 100 runners, so not a big run. I had a great run though, around the 2 mile mark I could tell that I was slowly closing the distance between me and the runner in front, so I picked up the pace thinking it would be great to post that I chicked some guy at the race. At around mile 21/2 I was closing in to about 20 yards, at almost the 3 mile mark I was shoulder to shoulder with him, we turned the corner and could see the finish, some guy breazed past us... then the guy I was next to ran to catch him... I could not pick up my pace enough to catch them before the finish :( so mad that I didn't beat him. They have not posted the official times, but if my watch is close, this was my fastest 5K in probably 6 years. :) Pretty Cool Huh!!!

Well I ran the Standard Classic 10K today. It was a very nice day and run. My 82 year old Mom came with me and did the two mile walk, so it was a nice way to spend the morning with her. They have not posted the official times, so I will edit this post when they do to be a race post. I think my time was 51:21:45 and I was 7th in my age group. They grouped the ages by ten years so I though that was weird. I must have run pretty hard because I'm tired right now, but I was hoping to do a bit better. Well maybe next time.

6.2 miles 51:21

Edited this as a race report. I guess I started my watch a bit slower, but I corrected the time now. There was 193 10K runners, and 25 women in my age group. I guess that is not too bad.

From Metcalf Running on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 22:49:38

Marion, one of my favorite races ever is the Provo River 10 miler. It is a beautiful course and had the cool t-shirt with James Christensen art. I haven't done it in a while but though.

Marion I like the term molasses monday LOL that fits the way so monay mondays feel. :)

Sasha, you are probably right, you would think that having Sunday off would help with the recovery, but maybe you are still in a bit of recovery, in the begining of the week. I will probably do a bit shorter miles today.

From Metcalf Running on Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 11:50:48

Marion, Hope you little one gets feeling better. It's hard to have a sick baby.

From marion on Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 11:59:50

I know I am new to running, but it takes me about four running days before I feel normal again. Although my last 5 k was not like that at all, or at least not to noticeable.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 16:53:34

One day off may not be enough after a hard race. This is not unusual. To recover, I would not necessarily reduce the volume, but rather the intensity. In some cases, cross-train for part of the workout. Depends on the nature of the fatigue.

Well today did not feel so good. Why is it that the first 2-3 miles of a run always feel hard? Then on top of it I needed to have a potty break twice in the first 21/2 mile AGHHHH I feel like I was fighting my body the entire way. Well mile 4 or 5 didn't feel too bad:) I'm hoping that it's still just that my legs have not fully recovered from the race Saturday. I took it slower... but not really by choice LOL

Hormones giving you tummy issues, I never heard of that! My hormones just tell me that I'm ready to have a baby LOL! I keep telling them I need a husband first but they don't seem to care ;)

You should post something on the discussion board about your tummy issues and see if anyone has suggestions...

From Metcalf Running on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 21:51:46

Marion... I hope that being consistent is good. I think I would rather be fast LOL

Lucia, Sometime times of the month I'm constipated, other times it's better. I think that is the hormones... I don't know though. It could also be that sometime of the month I eat way too much chocolate and then other times I'm much better. If I watched my diet better I think the tummy trouble would be better. Easier said then done for me.:(

From marion on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 21:54:36

Today was a complete running debacle! A while ago a running friend had told me about some new trails in N. Ogden, so I planned on running there. It's closer to my house and I really wanted to run some trails today. I parked at the trail head parking lot just up N. Ogden divide, the sign said Bonneville Shoreline trail, sweet this should be great! right! I start going and pretty soon I realize I'm way too over dressed, I NEVER expose my tummy but after 20 minutes I'm dieing, so I figure I have not seen any one else so it will be safe to take off my shirt and just run with my sports bra. Soon I realize I can not find the trail... I take a path that heads straight up the mountain... thinking it will go in the right direction. I huff up a huge hill, and when it finally levels off and I can run a bit it dead ends!!! AGHHH... I can see a trail below but can't get to it... so down the steep path back to where another path heads off.... I think I'm good now... then the trail heads into a barb wire fence what the heck!.... down the tail again and out to another trail head, and now there are bikers... and I have my shirt tied to my waist... I think... I don't know them so it will be OK and I can ask about how to get on the right trail. As I approach one of the bikers I realize much to my shame he works at my building... oh the shame of it... I tough it out and ask if he knows how to get to the trail that I point to. He tells me he has only gone the other direction. So now I'm determined to get to that trail and have a good run!!! I run down the road a bit until a get to another open area that goes up to the trails.... Ureaka!!! I'm thinking this is it... Climb up the first steep part then I will be happily running this trail. The trail levels off a bit and two to three turns onto the trail and it dead ends!! I'm talking complete dead end to a cliff.... So down I go again... back the way I had started I'm thinking this is crazy I have been out here for 40 minutes and still have not the trail that I think I can run on. So dishearted I slowly jog up the trail that all the biker are taking, that is not going the direction I had planned, I turn around at the 55 minute mark and head back to my car. :( I think I got about 51/2 miles of a run in, but it was a hard effort with all the climing. Today all my kids and grandkids are coming over for birthday party (Husband, oldest son and oldest grandaughter) I hope that everyone else had a better run. Have a great weekend.

How funny to be shirtless and see someone you know. I am always afraid I will leave the house without a shirt. From Todd on Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 17:28:34

Hey there,

I saw your comments and way to go! I haven't been doing well on the running thing yet. I need to follow your lead!!! Have a great day!

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 20:28:39

I noticed that you have no problem running sub-9:00 pace, and often naturally choose it during a run, but at the same time have difficulty racing at anything faster than 8:00. This is abnormal. For a comparison, I rarely would choose to run sub-7:00 in a relaxed run, but can race a 10 K at 5:18 pace. To address the issue - you can probably start the following this week, and continue it after your legs recover from St. George:

Once a week during your regular run do 5 1 minute accelerations. Go fast, not all out, but you should feel some quickness and a little bit of a bear on your back towards the end as well. Take as much rest as you need in between and run as slow as your body wants to. Run your normal mileage that day, and other days as well. If feeling fatigued the day after, still run the normal mileage, but slower.

The assumption is that you have aerobically conditioned yourself to support higher speeds, but your nervous system does not believe you can go faster. So we try to trick it.

From Metcalf Running on Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 22:04:25

Sasha,

I think I understand what you think I should do. On one day of my week I do 5 1 minute accelerations. Don't go all out but go quite a bit faster.

I guess I don't understand why having difficulty racing at a pace faster than 8:00 is abnormal? I have never been a very fast runner. I wonder if I'm too old to ever be faster LOL. I'm not running St. George, but I will be out of town some of this week. I will try and incorporate the accelerations into my week. Thanks as always for you input.

Lori

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 13:27:38

Difficulty racing at any pace is not abnormal, but difficulty racing only 12% faster than your comfortable training pace is abnormal. Either the comfort of the training pace is deceiving, or there is some mental or neurological block that keeps you from racing faster. But your training pace has been consistent over few months, you do not seem to overtrain, and day after day naturally choose that pace. So I think your training pace is right, it is the racing pace that is not.

There really was no rhyme or reasoning to my plan. When I felt like it I accelerated for a minute then backed off. The first one I was a bit to easy on myself. The middle ones were better and by the last one I was ready to not do any more. Then I finished slowly about 3/4 a mile. I hope this was good. I will keep trying to incorporate this into my runs.

I noticed severe lack of sleep this week. So some trouble ahead - slow runs, reduced immune system. Probably good that you ran only 2 miles in this condition. Get some sleep, recover from the illness, eat healthy foods in abundance, and once you feel better start training normally. In the meantime, just jog for a couple of miles every day to sweat off some junk and to monitor your health level.

Thanks Marion, but ohhh is is soooo hard to have a big fat 0 on a day that usually I would not. But I think you are right, I had just been too stressed and tired form the classes. Even though I had a great time and loved every minute of the experience. I have always loved this instructors dolls, from the time that I had started making dolls, and she was so wonderful to meet in person, very generous will all her knowledge and just really was great! Now back to reality of work...home... family and trying to squeeze in some doll time :)

Well today the alarm went off at 4:40am so I could run before work, because my daughter had a band concert tonight. I got dressed and then looked for my headlight, my streets are way to dark to run without it. I searched for so long that I realized that I would not be able to get a run in, so I ended up doing a laundry. :) When I woke my husband to get ready for work, he asked how my run was, when I told him I didn't get it in because I could not find my head light, he fessed up that he had borrowed it to get some projects done and left it out in the garage. Needless to say I had to get my run in after work, I was able to get five miles in before I had to get home, then the poor people next to me just had to put up with being next to a stinky person LOL

There was another couple about 1 1/2 miles later, but they stopped and walk right as I got to them so I guess that is not an offical one :) Everything felt pretty good, had one potty stop and one quick streatch.

Sasha,

It would be great if I could run a 5K under 24:00. I think my PR is 24:10 and that was quite a few years ago on a very flat course. It will be fun to see if I have had improvements next year when I run the races that I usually run. Thanks for all your encouragement it always helps me.

Had a very rough night's sleep, can't really say what caused it. Well I guess I should say I don't know why I woke, but I know that it was my dear hubby's snoring that was making it hard to get back to sleep. I knew I had to get my run in before work, I'm doing stuff with the grandkids tonight. So even though it might have been more fun to shoot myself in the foot, I got up and did 5 miles. From Metcalf Running on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 12:16:23

You are so sweet Marion, I don't feel fast. I started running about 10 years ago, but back then I was not running as much as I am now. Maybe 15 miles a week if I was lucky. I remember thinking I could never finish a 5K without walking. Then my friend (the one we did the NAMI walk for) slowly got me running more, and when I got in the FRB my miles have really gone up alot. So I have to thank Sasha and this blog for really making me a better runner. There have been so many days that I didn't want to run but knew that I would be posting here and having support here has really helped.

I ran on my lunch break today at work. When I ran the other day my usual path was under some construction, I had complained to one of my team members that also worksout on lunch quite often. He told me about a new path that I could run on. Most of my coworkers bike at lunch. So it was 99% trails and I enjoyed it very much. One thing got my confused... on the way out there was a tree that you had to duck under, and on my way back I never seen it so I thought I had run a different path back, when I was explaining that to my co-worker, he told me that he had run out to the tree and cut it down... so that explained why it was not there on my way back LOL. I was a bit slow today... I think because it was a windy trail with some slippery areas.

One bad thing about upping my miles is having to buy shoes more often. I don't know how Sasha and some of the others here on the blog can put so many miles on their shoes. I can usually feel in in my bodu around 400 miles. Then I know I need new ones.

From marion on Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 17:22:09

Ihave heard to that the more pairs you have, the more mile you can put on them. The theory goes like this. The "magic" springy shoe stuff takes 24-48 hours to fully recover from a run. If you run on it before it is fully recoverd it degrades the shoe faster. So there is the "theory" :D

When I do I ride the van that drives back and forth between the buildings all day, I was getting out of the van at the end of the day... the heal of my shoe caught the step and down I went on my right knee. AHGGGG how embarrassing.!!! I wish I could say this doesn't happen often but that is not the case. So now my knee and my shins are hurting.

My right shin was hurting quite a bit for the first mile, then it seemed to mellow out. At about the 41/2 mark it started hurting again, I was hoping for 6 miles but I will settle for the 5.2. You can not believe how scared I was in teh dark running around on the trails. I thought for sure I was going to end up face down... but YAHHHH I did pretty good.

So I had a terrible nights sleep. I woke up  in the middle of the night (about 12:30) with a terrible headache. I thought I might be dehydrated so I drank a bunch of water... then took some aleve, but still after 21/2 hour of being awake my head still hurt. I finally got to sleep a bit later, then when I woke for work, my head hurt but not to the extent it did in the night. I took off work a bit early because they were selling some excess property and I wanted a desk for my art room. Then when I got home I decided to try a run. My right shin is still a bit touchy so I thought I would do five and take it slow. It felt pretty good and I ended up doing 6 and the last mile felt better then the first!! If I had all the tech gear I would probably have done a negative split, but I can't say for sure.

I don't think it's shin splints, when I had them many years ago they hurt when you pushed on your shins, Mine is not like that now, it aches but not nessicarily when you push on it, I don't know what is going on :(

So yesterday was a total bust... I was helping my husband with project at our oldest daughters house. My shin had been bugging and I wasn't sure running the roads was such a good idea.
My friend Anthony had told me they would be running Sunday so I met up with them and we ran Mueller's Canyon, this was 61/2 miles up then back down. I had a great time but... I hate so much being the slowest of the group. Aghhh!!! It sucks so much !!!

I was happy that I didn't fall or have any major trouble besides being slow.

You're in good company. It's one of the reasons I run alone. Sometimes I wonder if I have a single fast-twitch muscle in my whole body.

From Metcalf Running on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 09:49:12

How do you get them??? Is this one of those things that you are either born with or is it something you can develop? And if I can develop them... should I have done it when I was younger...because right now it feel like I'm getting slower and slower.

From Snoqualmie on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 14:03:04

I believe they can be developed somewhat through speedwork and plyometrics. I'll let you know if I ever see any on me. ;)

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 16:47:54

There's no shame in being slow. We're all blessed to be able to run, whatever the pace. Of course I say that, but would like to get faster myself. I'm just preaching to myself.

After two days with out running I thought I would try to see if my shin felt any better. My friends had invited me to run Ben Lomond Peak (sorry for the spelling), but that would be about 41/2 hours and I just didn't think I wanted to push myself that much.

So I ran the same path that I did last Thursday when I ran the trails at night. It was pretty nice. My shins didn't hurt the entire run... but started hurting when I was walking around a bit after. Hmmm wonder what is going on.

I didn't time myself, but I figured I was at about 10 minute miles.

From Metcalf Running on Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 08:21:16

From Metcalf Running on Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 15:05:19

Marion,

From what I have looked at.. I'm 99.9% certain it's shin splints.. :( But I do think they are getting better. It just seems to be taken fooorrr eeeevvvvvverr (Sand Lot) LOL But I'm not the most patient person either. It probably would help if I was a bit more diligent with the iceing. I'm sure in a few more weeks I will be fine. But until then...I probably will complain more :)

I will find the shin workout later tonight and send it to you. I am sorry to hear about your friend, i prayed for her and will be praying for her.

From Barry on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 19:24:10

Barry, is your shin pain from shin splints? Jill, our running coach Donnie's wife, ran track at Baylor University. I had shin splints a few weeks before Boston last year and she taught me how to overcome them and how to never get them again. Here is the simple workout that you do.

1. Before you run do these exercises:

- duck walk with your toes pointing outward away from each other for 20 meters.

- duck walk with your toes pointing inward toward each other for 20 meters.

- heel walk with your toes pointing up for 20 meters.

- walk backwards on your toes for 20 meters.

- then do your other regular stretches or other drills and then do your run.

2. After your run do this simple exercise. Find a step or curb that has a hand rail or something you can hold on to and steady yourself. Stand on the step on one foot with your forefoot (have your heel extended off the step in the air).

Raise yourself and lower yourself as many times as you can until your calf muscle burns. I usually get about 100 raises in a set.

Change legs and with the other foot raise and lower yourself as many times as you can until that calf muscle burns.

Repeat this with each leg so you can get 3 sets with each leg.

You are done. If you do these pre-run drills and post-run exercise you will never get shin splints again and the shin splints you have will heal very quickly.

I hope this helps.

Barry

I was too afraid to give them to them for Christmas but did it anyway and it scared the crap out of my oldest daughter when she saw it. I had to send them back for a refund. Funny huh? CRAP about the shin! Maybe Advil and ice for the rest of the week might be a good idea. It won't hurt your training and it will help it heal ;) 20 minutes of ice very hour or two does wonders. I use a large ace bandage to keep it in place, that way I can still get my chores done. 600 to 800 mg of ibuprofen every 6 to 8 hours is a nice dose. No, I am not a doctor, but I play one on TV! ;) If you did this for 4 days and no running, you'd at least see what's up. Elevation is a good thing too.

Thanks Marion, I think that is good advice... I think I might try it. I also got some different medication for my thyroid and some other supplements so I hoping that I can get feeling better. I have been having some major fatigue issues.

From marion on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 22:50:36

Not good. What is your tsh level? I have to keep mine at about a 1 or I am a crazy person! IF your tsh is too high, it makes it almost impossible to heal too. Hang tough honey!

Tried to get in more but it just was not possible, been having lots of muscle fatigue and just plan tiredness. I start some new thyroid medication in the morning and some other supplements so hopefully things will turn around.

Just was wondering if any of you have opinions on homeopathic medicine?

If thyroid is part of the picture: www.stopthethyroidmadness.com ... changed my life. Also, more vitamin D! Seven hours of sleep? For me, that would not get me through the day - my 2c. Take care and I hope your get it figured out. :) Snoq

Snoq, thanks for the link. If you don't mind me asking... What do you take for your thyroid? I went to a natural heath center and they told me to get on armour thyroid. My Endro. doc switch me and I started taking it today... so I'll see in a few weeks if it makes any difference. The natural health people told me that my adrenals are not working well and gave me stuff to help that, like I said I'll see how I feel after a few weeks of this regimen.

Yes - Armour Thyroid is my new best friend. I also had some severe adrenal stuff going on. PM me if you would like more details; I'm not comfortable posting it publicly but I'm happy to tell you about it. :)

Homeopathic medicine is great stuff for LOTS of stuff. I am one who goes to different types of doc's for different things. I am not anti traditional medical field, nor am I anti homeopathic. There is much good on both sides of the fence and equally as much quackery. I really like to find true healers no matter the discipline. They are pretty easy to identify, usually in the first visit, but sometimes it takes a few times. The healers have a special spirit around them. The very worst are the non-healer doctors & surgeons who got into medicine for who knows why. You can spot one of them from a mile away! Non-healer chiropractors are #2 on my list!

Sorry, that was kind of long!

Hey you!! I hope you had a great christmas!

I think running in this snow junk makes us have to learn how to run all over again. I keep getting the weirdest pains and aches. I am guessing between the treadmill, the snow, the ice and the occasional dry road, my body is freaking out!

Kiss that new baby for me!

From Metcalf Running on Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 21:42:50

Marion, I had a wonderful Christmas, I hope that you did also.

Running in the snow and slippery stuff is really making me work harder then I thought it should. I love how pretty it is, I don't mind the cold too much I just wish the roads would dry out!

Did you look at my blog to see his pictures? He is beautiful!!

Slow and slippery was the theme for today's run...Had to call it short also because of some tummy trouble :( Maybe I will try to get some miles in tomorrow. What a pathetic week for miles.

Didn't sleep very well last night. I decided to run on the treadmil to see if my shin would not hurt as much as on the road. It still bugged for the first two miles.
I had an appointment with the doctor today, he ajusted my insoles and gave me a perscription, wrapped my calf and I go see him in a couple of weeks to see if this will help.

I am so glad that that you got in to see the doctor. I sure hope it helps. What did he think was the matter? Hopefully the insole adjustment will do the trick :)

From Metcalf Running on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 23:18:15

Marion, he said that I had waited to long to get new runners and then with the insole needed to be adjusted, I inflamed my shin, something like the muscle is pulling away or something like that. I have to keep a compression bandage on it, ice it and take some meds. I go back in two weeks so I hope it helps too. :)
